With the encouragement and support of Ms. Crowley and their librarian, Ms. Donkar, these outstanding students read and submitted more comments than any other group in Baltimore County Public Schools.  As a result of participating in virtual discussions, students had multiple opportunities not only to discuss character traits, but also to hone the writing and collaboration skills that will give them a competitive edge in high school and beyond.  Each student will receive a certificate and a gift card at a ceremony held to honor their accomplishments on May 18, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. in the school library media center. 

 What It Is:  The Baltimore County Public Schools (BCPS) Books of Character Internet Book Club is an opportunity for BCPS middle school students, teachers, parents, and community members to select books from a suggested reading list based on an identified theme relating to the BCPS Character Objectives.  Students will read their selected books and engage in an Internet book club by participating in wiki discussions and completing activities related to the BCPS Character Objectives and the development of good character. Each quarter, we will focus on a different character trait.  Click here to go to the calendar.

Why It Is Important:  The Books of Character Internet Book Club provides a systemwide opportunity for students, teachers, parents, and community members to participate in activities that help students analyze, discuss, and develop good character.    

How to Participate:   Each month, middle school students throughout the county will discuss virtually and f2f books they are reading that illustrate the Baltimore County Public Schools Character Objectives: respect, wisdom, sense of justice, tolerance, responsibility, honesty, discipline, integrity, pride, and a positive attitude.  Each quarter, participating students are expected to read and discuss one fiction or nonfiction book related to the theme for that quarter.  Students may choose to read books from the recommended list or self select other books as long as they can provide a cogent explanation of how the characters, plot, or themes demonstrate the Character Objective.  For more information, click on Begin Here for Students in the sidebar.
